12 Things in 2012
Below is my list of 12 things I want to do in 2012. I am hoping that this concise list will keep me focused without making me feel overwhelmed like if I had listed 100 things to do this year! Join the fun and set your own year-long “to do list”! I am posting an update each month about the progress I have made and you can find the links to each of those at the bottom of this page under “Trackbacks”
Run 6 trail races. (#1 – 10K; #2 – 10 Miler; #3 -10K+ ; #4 – Half Marathon ; #5 – 4 Mile Night Run ; #6 – Doggie 5K )Submit an NIH (or similar) grant proposal.Run my first marathon.- Ski 30 days. I know, this does not sound like a lot to all of you ski bums out there, but it is hard to get in a lot of days while working on my PhD and not living close to any mountains! (January; February; November )
- Go on 12 hikes. (#1 – Lake Trail ; #2 – McAfee’s Knob ; #3 – Tinker Cliffs ; #4 – Cascades ; #5 – Several Trails in Acadia National Park; #6 – Cadillac Mtn #7 – Cascades ; #8 – Mill Mountain ; #9 – Shenandoah National Park ; #10 – Crabtree Falls )
Start and FINISH one of those DIY teeth whitening boxes.Make a trip back to Wyoming/Colorado. (Lived in WY for 5 years and I miss the Rockies very much)!Get together with my college friends. We all currently live all over the country, so getting us all together at once = challenging!- Cut my peanut butter consumption down to 2 jars a month, as it is currently at 4 jars/month! Maybe I should buy all 24 jars at once, and when they are gone, so is my PB intake for the year! (Still going strong after 11 months)
- Make a list of all of my commitments, obligations, etc and the prioritize them and remove some. I have way too much going on and I always do it at the expense of my workouts, sleep, household chores, and fun. I really wanted to make a goal related to allowing myself to have fun and relax as well as to make workouts a priority, but the truth is, until I remove some of my deadline laden extracurriculars, committee work, volunteer work, etc there is no chance of fulfilling the other two. (Progress); (Another Step in the Right Direction) ; (The List and Time per Week) ; (Some More Progress); (Slowly But Surely)
Make my own sushi. I have only done it once before and it NEEDS to happen again!Visit 2 National Parks that I have not yet been to.On my bucket list is to visit ALL of them…so need to start chipping away at the list! ( #1 – Acadia National Park ) ( #2 – Shenandoah National Park )

Oh my. #4 sounds ambitious, but now I realize that it’s for all of 2012, and not just the 2011-12 season. Here’s to an early and snowy 2012 fall from another geographically-challenged skier!
I didn’t count any days from the start of last winter even though I did ski quite a bit in December. Started my count on January 1st of this year and thanks to the hot winter and being “geographically-challenged” as you say (p.s. – love that term) it has been harder than I thought to get in lots of days. Will start doing a snow dance in October to help me get to the 30 day mark!
P.S. – saw you crossed Hot Chocolate 15K off your race list for the year. Good call. Total debacle – and an expensive one at that!
It’s really unfortunate how horribly the Hot Chocolate 15K went because it had potential. I was originally really sad to be out of town that weekend, but when I heard how screwy it wound up, I was really relieved. Phew!
I’ll be snow dancing with you!
I stumbled across your blog via the Nutrition Blog Network and I’m so glad I did because you are my RD idol! I am currently trying to decide whether or not to go back for my PhD, and other dietitians like you inspire me. I also love this list, especially #6 – glad I’m not the only Crest Whitestrips dropout!
Thanks Tori! I’m glad you found my blog too. I say go for the PhD. If there is an area of research you are interested in pursuing than go for it!
